Government officials from the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock in Bangladesh visited Indonesia for a 12-day training program funded by FAO, to learn about using an Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) with climate change adaptation. The training included guest lectures, field visits, and group exercises, to learn about EAFM principles, participatory approaches, and co-management strategies. With reflective conversations, case studies, and site visits to mangrove areas, the Ministry of Fisheries staff experienced how co-management principles were applied in Indonesia. A visit to CIFORICRAF, to hear lectures from experts and specialists on mangroves and climate change, provided further insights into mitigation and adaptation strategies. Additionally, the training included sessions on Fisheries and Aquaculture Response in Emergency (FARE), equipping officials with vital tools to address crises in the fisheries sector effectively.
Throughout the programme, participants explored the challenges and opportunities in implementing EAFM plans in Bangladesh's unique context. Drawing from successful case studies in Hawaii and Indonesia, they gained valuable insights into effective implementation strategies. The training also included learning about climate change resilience, with sessions on vulnerability assessments, climate-smart fisheries, and the role of Climate Information Services. Through action planning sessions, participants developed strategies for sustained impact, ensuring the transfer of knowledge and skills back to their workplace with positive behaviour change.
