What does a policy brief provide?
A policy brief transforms research insights into clear, actionable recommendations. These help policymakers understand issues, evaluate potential solutions, and make informed, evidence-based decisions.
How has IMA supported policy brief development in the Red Sea State?
IMA International co-produced key policy briefs as part of the UNIDO project. ‘Building institutional capacities for an eco-system approach to management of the marine fishery in the Red Sea State (Phase II)’. These were developed in collaboration with the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), Norway, the Sudanese Marine Fisheries Administration, the Fisheries Research Station (FRS), and the Faculty of Marine Science Red Sea University (FMSRSU).
Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management (EAFM) approach
These policy briefs are to support future fisheries policy development. All key partners advocate the use of an Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management (EAFM) approach. This can address specific challenges faced in the region. This includes the impact of the population relocation due to the conflict in Sudan. It also includes gender mainstreaming, introducing alternative livelihoods for fishing communities, and management of plastic pollution along the coast. EAFM principles emphasize the critical role of stakeholder collaboration in addressing complex environmental challenges. This approach advocates for a balanced integration of social, development, and environmental conservation through effective governance.
Tools and techniques used in developing policy briefs
Developing a good policy brief means condensing complex research findings. It also uses local knowledge and perspectives, to develop it into a usable and accessible document for policy makers. A balance between presenting evidence and advocacy must be carefully managed. These briefs were created during online workshops. The core team, members of Red Sea State fishing communities and subject matter experts were involved. This supported the creation of a policy brief that respected local knowledge. It also built on the research completed by the Sudanese institutions and the IMR. Incorporating the EAFM approach of co-developing solutions to the pressing challenges in the region.
IMA International have worked with in Sudan since 2017. We are immensely appreciative of the positive approach and optimism from the team. We will be thinking of the team in Sudan always and we hope peace comes soon.
