Writeshop on Deep-Sea Law in Practice Training (DEEP FLIP)

We facilitated a writeshop at FAO HQ in Rome with members from the legal department, fisheries as well as Strathclyde University Legal Specialists and IMA International as the capacity development specialists. We met to develop further a training workshop on deep-sea fisheries law in practice (DEEP FLIP). The purpose of this training is to:

1. identify the range of international instruments relevant to deep-sea fishing and its impacts on marine biodiversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ)

2. understand the need for integrated implementation of international instruments at the national level, and

3. learn participants’ relevant experience and how much is already ongoing on the ground

Objectives were agreed for the 9 modules and excercises discussed and elaborated on for these. The next step is to refine the writeshop outputs and put this all together at a pilot training workshop in Thailand in October 2018.
